Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have a Sony Vaio CR120E/L with Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 installed.
I noticed bands of colors (e.g. in the login screen) which indicates
xorg is using less than 24bit colors. However, when I plug in an External
LCD Monitor (without changing my xorg.conf) and restart the computer, the
image in the laptop screen remains the same as before (with color bands),
but the image on the external display is very smooth, clearly 24 bits.
I'm using kernel 2.6.22-10, but the same thing happens with version
2.6.20-16-generic.

Similar problem with my Toshiba A205-S4777.
3d acceleration does work, compiz is working fine.
Also replaced xserver-xorg-video-i810 with xserver-xorg-video-intel.

It is entirely possible that your Laptop LCD doesn't actually have 24bpp (8 bits per channel) colour. Many LCDs, although they claim to support 24bpp colour, actually use 6 bits per channel internally. Since your external LCD doesn't display these artifacts it suggests this may be the explaination.

Just to be sure, could you please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, preferably with both internal & external LCDs on. It would also be useful if you could test under other drivers (the i810 drivers) and maybe even other operating systems, if possible.

I tested my monitor under VIsta and it worked fine, meaning I was
able to see the file http://www.visi.com/~leppik/images/bit_test24.png
perfectly smooth. In linux the same image looks exactly like this:
http://www.visi.com/~leppik/images/bit_test18.png

I'm attaching my /Xorg.0.log file after booting with both the internal
and external monitors on.

With the i810 driver I get a blue screen of error.
Attached is the corresponding Xorg.0.log file.

Since it seems to be working for the reporter (in Gutsy), marking as fix released. Please feel free to re-open this bug if you believe that this is incorrect.
