Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

When using nautilus in lookup mode, i.e. browse for a file for opening or selecting, the list of files is always in list mode. It would be very handy when one can change to icon mode, because then there's automatically a preview.

This has especially much value when browsing for an image, say for adding an attachmant in a gmail message within firefox.

Note. special lookup screens for example eog already have a preview, but this is a special mode, this should be generic.

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use. What is the "lookup mode"? Could you make a screenshot of the bug?

What is the "lookup mode": standard dialog when opening a file in an application, say gedit, gthumb, etc.
I've added a mockup: normally files are shown in a list, but I activated an icon view
This icon view is normally available nautilus where you can choose list or icon view, except in typical lookup dialogs.

What you call "lookup mode" is not clear, do you speak about fileselectors? Could you describe easy steps to trigger the bug? What do you expect and what do you get?

Well, it's not exactly a bug but merely a feature request...
When I want to open a file, say in gedit, after 'File', 'Open' a 'File Open Dialog' appears (caption: 'Open files...'. I my terminology I call this a lookup dialog, your description of 'file selector' is probably better.
In this particular dialog, I'm missing the option that I cannot switch to icon mode for preview purposes (in stead of the standard list mode), see the attached mockup image.

Those widget are GtkFileSelectors from libgtk and have nothing to do with nautilus, reassigning. There is already a request upstream about it, you can read about it on http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=141154

In Hardy, there's a preview implemented. Tested this and it works OK.
So, this one can be closed, "Fix released".

maked for users and users sometimes send photos and cant select easy correct
beacose system limit select file only to see filenames why ? if in other
view i see thumbs i think there is easy to add it and next step is ready
