Bug Description

Binary package hint: xchat

The first time you click on the xchat window close button, there's a dialog asking what to do (close, minimize...) and a checkbox that should make xchat remember the user choice. But if you quit xchat, and you click on the close button, the dialog appears again, even if you've choosen remember.

I think xchat should remember (if asked to) the close button behaviour from session to session, and have a setting in the preferences dialog to be able to change this settings.

I just noticed that this bug is quite dated and that there has been no activity for quite some time. In an effort to clean up our bug database I am closing this issue. If it still exists please create a new one or re-open this bug by marking it as "new" again.

I'm experiencing the same problem. If I enter...

 /set gui_tray_flags 1

.. within xchat, closing the xchat windows will make the app minimise to the tray; however this isn't remembered.

I'm using XChat 2.8.6 from the Jaunty repos.

I think I've found a permanent fix;

open ~/.xchat2/xchat.conf for editing
replace 'gui_tray_flags = 0' with 'gui_tray_flags = 1'

XChat will remember this setting, assuming that a clean shutdown is done. The issue is that the preferences aren't saved to disk right at that time, but either waits for the shutdown, or some other event which causes the save to occur. Even if it appears to be a clean shutdown to you (the steps went through), if something gets aborted along the way, it is possible for the save not to happen.

Hope that is clear enough, and also why you won't see this bug every time. Clean shutdowns mean this issue doesn't appear.

Indeed, that does appear to be a fix for the issue.

Yes, this and manually editing the config works of course.
But expected behaviour after selecting minimize to tray and selecting "Don't ask next time" in the dialog then Ok should write that to the config immediately.
