Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

Suspend and hibernate in Fiesty don't work perfectly on all laptops, and a user will definitely be looking at ways to fix this.

Searching 'suspend', 'broken suspend', 'hibernate' and 'broken hibernate' in the yelp files doesn't yield any satisfactory results, just small articles on how to suspend.

This issue should be addressed, as it'll help make diagnosing easier.

I'm not really a technical expert yet, but I'll try and gather any available info on this.

The page here [1] seems to be outdated, and it's only for 6.06.

Another page [2] is quite complex, and with a 'BE AWARE THERE ARE KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH THIS APPROACH' warning, it's not something you'd want to try out...

I found this blog page to be useful [3]. Especially Robin Battey's post near the top of the page, where he describes an easier way of setting it up, and, making the procedure look much nicer with splash screens.

If anyone can help me sort this mess out, I'd be really grateful. Broken suspend/hibernate really turns laptop users away.

With issues like this, there is a difficult balance to address. In some cases, the answer is that it's not for the documentation to fix, it's something that needs to be fixed with Ubuntu. In other cases, the issue is so widespread that it's helpful to include information about how to address it.

In this case, the issue is specific to certain models of laptop, and the proposed solution (uswsusp) is something that has been specifically rejected by Ubuntu developers for inclusion for reasons which we have to assume are sound. I don't think that we can include documentation to help.

What we can do is to ask people to submit a bug if suspend doesn't work on their model in the hope that this will permit the developers to improve the situation for the next release.

Right, but submitting a bug will not help solve the problem for them currently... bugs in a project like this sometimes can take a long time go fix.

Can we include a recommendation, that *if* the normal suspend method doesn't work, they should report a bug - and also try a _not_ recommended, but helpful for some people, method of the µswsusp?

Wolter, thanks for working on this bug. You're initial draft looks promising - do you plan to finish it? I'd like to move over your existing documentation to a new page simply called Suspend or SuspendToRAM, merge it with valid existing documentation, and set a redirect from the SuspendHowto page (since its name violates our naming convention - now HowTo is needed in a name). After that, we can remove your SuspendHowtoNew page.

Spending hours of googling and trial and error just to get suspend to work isn't nice and I'm surprised so many users have the problem but there's near to no hint of how to solve it in reaonable time.

The new SuspendHowTo would surely be a big help if it could include a tutorial telling some steps, known issues, and which places to look!
And if there was a way to gather solutions found for different laptop configs that would be superior.

Thats my experience so far:
Hibernate and suspend worked when I installed 8.04.3-LTS.
Then I installed the latest 9.10 on a different partition and suspend retuns with a black screen and can only be recovered with a hard reset (I tried blndly typing in the password to no avail).
When I start 8.04 which is still on another partition, suspend doesn't work any more! Same effect like with 9.10.

I was curious and re-installed 8.04 and suspend worked again on 8.04, but not on 9.10.
Now I re-installed 9.10 and suspend ceased to work on 8.04 again meaning the effect is reproduceable.

Since 8.04 and 9.10 are on different partitions the only possible connection seems to be the BIOS. However, resetting the BIOS to default values doesn't help either.

My configuration is:
Laptop FSC Amilo A1667G
AMD Turion 64
ATI Mobility Radeon X700

According to link [1], the doc is candidate for deletion. Is the issue of knowking how to suspend still relevant right now?
