Bug Description

Binary package hint: aptitude

Am running gutsy.

Update manager often hangs, so I've taken to running sudo aptitude full-upgrade from the command line. However, this often hangs too. At the moment it's stuck here:

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

strace reveals:

I'm running Kubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron" and get the same thing every time I run Synaptic Package Manager. I have to log out, then stop Synaptic and restart Synaptic.

Aptitude under Hardy.
Background:
I recently upgraded from 7.04 through 7.10 to 8.04 and I got the same message from both aptitude and update manager:

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

Because of some frequent glitches with gksu I decided to do a fresh install of Hardy. After getting all upgrades (security, updates, proposed, as of 2008-06-15), for the first package I installed (thunderbird) aptitude produced the same message again.

.............
Configuring thunderbird (2.0.0.14+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1) ...

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
Reading packagelists... Done
...............

The installation went fine and thunderbird works fine. Since both update manager and aptitude gives the same message I would suspect dpkg or some other code they have in common to cause the problem.

Same here on KUbuntu 8.04.1:
It seems that the installation ends up good. I usually solve this problem by opening a console, typing xkill and then clicking the hanged-up window with the red cross in order to close it.
This problem may be realted to a strange behaviour observed in Adept Notifier: it does appear constantly in the task bar saying an update of "quicktime-...(whatever)" is required, no matter how many times I close it or apply the update.

I occasionally still get the
"Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place"
message, but otherwise for me aptitude works fine now.

Is this getting outdated?
