I add my Google talk account
save
go back to the settings
and it shows up as XMPP and not google talk

Not a bug IMO... Google-Talk is nothing more and nothing less than Jabber/XMPP.

I would like this to be fixed as an "Interface Enhancement" as well. While it makes sense code-wise to not create a separate plugin just for GTalk, I think having it automatically switch into Jabber would be a little confusing for new users. Empathy handles it quite well, as an example.

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution.

Since this bug is in Pidgin itself, I've opened a bug in the bug tracking system of Pidgin and I linked this new bug to the launchpad bug. That's always a good solution to find the bug tracking system that the upstream source author uses and to open a new bug on it. Since Pidgin isn't developed by ubuntu itself, this will get pretty better chances to get fixed by the people who works on it.

Pidgin developers took the decision to close the bug report from now, here's the Pidgin developpers answer :

This is working as intended. The idea was that people would learn that Google Talk uses XMPP. I don't think it's necessarily the best idea, either, but I don't see much reason to re-visit it.
