Have you tried running "alsamixer" in a terminal and then lowering the volume (using the arrow keys) on all capture/recording channels like microphone/CD/line-in (you may have to press tab once or twice in the interface to go through them all). That is a common cause of hiss on many sound cards.

Dumb question how do you get to a terminal?

Applications->accessories->Terminal, then just type in "alsamixer" (without quotes) and press return.

Do you still have this problem with Gutsy or Hardy? The problem only happens on startup? Otherwise it works ok?

I had the same problem.
Muting the microphone (&other input sound devices) did stop my PC hissing.

The problem is that KMix options are quite confusing for me:
what does Microphone and Microphone amplifier have in common with sound output?
