unable to connect to smtp server

Binary package hint: evolution

apologies if this IS a duplicate, i've looked through the other smtp related issues tho dont see one that i thin fits the symptoms over here:

issue is with connecting to smtp server at telus.net

receiving mail ok
sending mail times out.

i've called telus to verify the settings
there is no suthentication required, and the client should work with either smtp.telus.net OR mail.telus.net

unable to connect to either.

just for fun i tried setting authentication to on, and run the "check for auth. types" option, which also times out

never had this issue with evolution before and have used it with several different providers.

i cant see that itd be my ubuntu settings, asi've not got anything funky going on, i.e. not running internal mail servers, etc...
