Bug Description

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

Hello to everyone, this is my first bug report and I'm just an user willing to help, not a programmer, so forgive me if there's something wrong with my report. Also please forgive my not so perfect english.

I'm testing Ubuntu Gutsy.
I have and intel gma950 card and two LCD displays. The first one ( the main one, the notebook display) is 1280x800. The second one is 1360x768.
The problem is that, if I link them with VGA, they both go at 1360x768, so in the first display the image is cutted on the right part.
So I tried to use displayconfig-gtk to solve this and set the second display as a mirror of the first at the correct resolution, but it doesn't work at all:
- screen1 is set at 1366x768 and as default...I don't know if this is correct. I think default should be the notebook at 1280x800, not the external display connected with a vga cable. So I set this as secondary mirror display.
- screen 2 is disabled. I enable it as default and set at 1280x800. Under "model" i choose "LCD Panel 1280x800". Now something very bad happens: even if under model I have "1280x800", under resolution I dont get that, but only 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960, 1280x1024 and so on! But the worst part is that, no matter what I choose, the resolution of screen 1, which was ok before, is changed to 640x480. What a mess! :)
This happens both using i810 and intel drivers.
The problem happens even if I set screen1 as default and screen2 as secondary.
So in gutsy, right now, there's no way I can set my second monitor correctly.

I have the same problem with 2 Monitors and NVIDIA 7300GS Cards.
The connected monitors are Yuraku MJ9CNK TFTs with 1280x1024 resolution.
They are not in the database so i have to choose Generic TFT with 1280x1024.
But i cannot select the Monitors.
It falls back to Plug and Play and lets me choose only 480x640 and 800x600.

What can i do to use these monitors with displayconfig-gtk.

I have the same type of problem.
My main is an LCD and my second is a TV set (with SVIDEO)
I had to manually edit the resolutions and add the lines for the TV to work.

Dave.

Toshiba Satellite A105, ATI RADEON Express 200M, fglrx driver 1280x800 resolution gutsy current as of this morning

I just tried to give a talk; booted up my laptop with the projector plugged in. X wouldn't start, and instead I got display-config-gtk, which would only let me set up both monitors with a 640x480 resolution.

einfach, Dave, and Nigel, while it seems your issues are similar to the original report, actually they sound like independent bugs. Could you please file new bug reports on each of your issues, and please attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (and your original and/or working xorg.conf's if you still have them.)

Giovanni, can you attach to this bug report, your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and the output from `sudo ddcprobe`, `sudo xresprobe intel`, and `xrandr`?

What happens if you run `xrandr --auto`?

Also, as last week I committed some things that fix several resolution detection issues, can you please ensure your Gutsy is up to date, and re-test the issue?

5 months without a response. If this is still a problem in the final release of Gutsy, please reopen the ticket by changing the Status to "New" and responding to the questions asked above. Thank you!

For -intel especially, displayconfig-gtk doesn't work very well. The new Screen Resolution applet should be much better (although see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config for remaining manual configuration steps required.)

Also, displayconfig-gtk is being deprecated - see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/DisplayConfigGtk for details.)
