Bug Description

Binary package hint: acpi

Feisty up-to-date on Acer ASPIRE 1524WLMi AMD Athlon 64 Laptop

Kernel 2.6.20-16 i386

Internal VIA82XX modem working with sl-modem-daemon package from multiverse repositories.

Slam module compiled from source, downloaded here
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/slmodem-2.9.11-20070813.tar.gz

ungrab-winmodem module compiled from source, downloaded here
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/ungrab-winmodem-20070505.tar.gz

When I am connected via dial-up connection and using laptop battery, if I plug ac adapter in, everything freezes.

Then kern.log is:

Sep 16 18:39:40 lucia-laptop kernel: [ 5674.880000] BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!

I can use a terminal (Ctrl+ALT+F1) just waiting some minutes, killing slmodemd, then coming back to X (not always I can)(Ctrl+Alt+F7), starting slmodem daemon again, trying to dial-up, everything freezes again when modem is setting up.

Another thing.
When I am connected with dial up with laptop ac adapter already plugged in, when I unplug it, everything freezes (with same first message on kern.log (see above))
until I plug ac again, then everything returns normal.

But If I try to disconnect from dial-up and then reconnecting, It freezes again with second message on kern.log (see above)

Have you tested this with the Gutsy (2.6.20) Kernel? Even then, this isn't a very common case, so we would ask you to wait a few days for the Hardy kernel to become available and test with that. Please also see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies

This bug was nominated for Gutsy (and Feisty even) but does currently not qualify for a 7.10 stable release update (SRU) and the nomination is therefore declined.

According the the SRU policy, the fix should already be deployed and tested in the current development version before an update to the stable releases will be considered. With 7.10 now released, that policy applies to this bug. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

The bug is not being closed as work will continue on fixing it for the next release, Hardy Hernon (8.04). If the state of this bug should change such that it qualifies for the SRU process, please contact the person who originally declined it and ask them to re-evaluate it. To help improve the state of this bug see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage

Gutsy has 2.6.22 kernel.

I tested it with Feisty Kernel 2.6.20-16.
Unfortunately I can't test it with Gutsy right now because that laptop is not mine, I had it for a while to install Ubuntu.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hello,

For those who need a binary package, I have uploaded the package to my
PPA (https://launchpad.net/~aelmahmoudy/+archive), also fixed an FTBFS
for Intrepid. Binary packages for Hardy and Intrepid are available.
