Hi,

I was having a very similar problem to this (see bug 70739). In particular the negaive temp and fan settings problems seem to be due to a broken acpi DSDT. Following this article: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=623633, I fixed my DSDT and now my temperatures are being reported correctly and the fan seems to be functioning correctly.

Cheers,
Randall.

I've got the same problem but on Hardy alpha 2 with 2.6.24-3 kernel. As I noticed my CPU Fan doesn't work anymore on Haardy but works on other systems.

from log:
Jan 9 00:04:26 blacktosh kernel: [ 1006.220108] ACPI: Unable to turn cooling device [dd14fb40] 'off'

What's the most important: My laptop (Toshiba Satellite A105) overheats and hangs OS. Only hard power off helps in this state.

I have seen this two times on my 2.6.24-5.8 kernel. I'm running Hardy.

Feb 6 20:13:42 thomas kernel: [ 5494.292766] ACPI: Transitioning device [FAN] to D0
Feb 6 20:13:43 thomas kernel: [ 5494.292774] ACPI: Transitioning device [FAN] to D0
Feb 6 20:13:43 thomas kernel: [ 5494.292778] ACPI: Unable to turn cooling device [ee0f8318] 'on'

My fan runs at full speed (normally I can't even hear it).
