Bug Description

I had an issue that prevented me from comfortably using Ubuntu on a Sony Vaio. I was unable to control two very loud fans in the PC. The Ubuntu wiki did not solve the problem, but I was luckily able to get a solution from an Ubuntu Forum member, which involved adding the kernel module it87 with a fix via:

sudo modprobe it87 fix_pwm_polarity=1.

The issue and resolution is detailed at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=238566

This is an issue that probably affects many Sony Vaio laptops and PCs and it would be great if this was configured without user intervention. The steps to fix this issue are probably beyond the interest and ability of most users (Sony provides an easy to install fan driver on Windows only for my PC).

Could you try a Hardy Live CD to see if this problem has already been fixed?
