Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Totem has 5 fake browser plugins, 2 of which aren't enabled in the Ubuntu build. One of them is Cone (VLC) and the other is Complex (real). These should be enabled.

I think the issues with Complex no longer apply.

Complex still takes over realplayer no? So it means it would break it for all the desktop users

Not the ones which don't use RealPlayer.

right, do you have a way to suggest to make the plugin used for people who don't have realplayer installed only?

No, but java uses update-alternatives and so on, couldn't totem-mozilla and the realplayer packages use this type of thing?

The alternatives complicates the packages and are usually not user friendly (you need to change them from a command line for all the users)

I see your point, but I think supporting non-free software where a free alternative exists is rather silly, but reasonably typical of Canonical.

Never mind, I'll do it myself, pbuilder is fun.

The "typical of Canonical" is just not true, do you have any example where non-free software has been preferred to an equivalent free software? The comments on this bug are from me and not a Canonical statement, and note that the bug is still open which is mean it has not been rejected, it's just being discussed. Is there anything wrong about bringing pros and cons before choosing?

The complex plugin has been disabled on upstream recommendation is Ubuntu 7.04 and I'm not convinced that it works nicely, I'll give it a try. Do you some website you use with realplayer to look how it works? I'm all for using it if it's doing the job correctly. What I try to avoid is to force a broken software and remove the possibility for people who need a working version to install something else because the buggy software is installed by default and taking over other alternatives

Perhaps I am getting a wee bit too excited, I built it myself and the BBC stuff still doesn't work.

The cone plugin seems to have disappeared from the source, so I suppose it was too unstable.

Sorry about the Canonical comment, but the Firefox deal thing annoyed me.

Nice to see that Cone is built in Hardy.
