Bug Description

Version 7.04, installed just a couple days ago. Suddenly, whenever I try to install or download a program, codec pack or update, I get an error message that dpkg failed to run, and telling me to manually run "dpkg --configure -a". I try to run that in the application run console (alt-f2), and nothing happens--and I get the same error message the next time.

can you boot to console (without X)

I don't know what you mean--boot to console? Without X?

I'll look for the segmentation fault report later today--but so far, I've received the same message whether trying to download or trying to update/upgrade: dpkg failed to run.

I can mention: This is on a desktop dual-booting Ubuntu and Windows Vista. Ubuntu is on a separate, usb-connected external hard drive.

I figured out it wasn't so much a bug as my ignorance. Once I figured out how to open a terminal and enter the command, the problem was solved.
