application switcher too distracting

Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Using the application switcher (alt+tab) under normal effects is too distracting.

When doing a simple task such as switching apps, the user is bombarded with two things at once. The application switching box in the center of the screen and a jerky animation of the apps changing in the background. This is likely to cause confusion, irritation, and possibly headaches in the long run.

To solve this problem, the option "Bring To Front should be unchecked and somehow (it's not an option) the entire background (behind the switcher) should be grayed out.

I've just tried out the Compiz application switcher on Fedora 8 and I've noticed that it's implementation is much smoother than that of Gutsy's. It's basically the same thing except when switching the windows in the background, they each come to the front through a fade of dark to light. If Hardy does the same (or Gutsy for that matter) we would solve this bug.

We used to do the same but got complaints about it being jerky. The setup we have now is instant for me. No jerkiness, no slow transitions, etc.

That's what I meant by jerky - the instant transition. The instantaneous window transition and the application switcher box switching is a bad combination as it does not allow for the user to focus on the task at hand - switching apps. (see above description) If we had a smoother, fading implementation like that of Fedora's the user could focus on the application switcher box and not be distracted by the instant window shifting in the background.

This problem is fixed perfectly in Hardy Alpha 1, but it still exists in Gutsy. Is there any way this will get fixed in Gutsy? or should I mark this as Fix Released since it's been fixed the the next version of Ubuntu?
