Bug Description

The Screen and Graphics Preferences doesn't always show me the same options, and it behaves strange.

I have a DELL P991 crt monitor, so i chose the model for screen 1, the default screen. I chose the maximum resolution, 1600x1200, but when i try to choose the frequency, i am given 3 weird options: 60, 61 and 64Hz (my monitor can display 1600x1200 at 85Hz). so i select the highest, 64, and restart.
When i go back to Screen and Graphics Preferences, it has a different resolution selected, 1280x1024 @ 64.

My monitor's OSD shows 1280x1024@75Hz. Also, 1280x1024 is the resolution selected from preferences -> Screen Resolution, where i'm also limited to 60, 61 and 64Hz. And speaking of this window, when i select 1600x1200 i'm given the following frequencies: 50, 51, 53, 55, 56. Other resolutions are corelated with other strange frequencies.

nope, not as it should.

i selected "Model: Plug 'n' Play, Resolution: 1280x1024 @ 85Hz" and loged off.
After that, the log in screen behaved strange. I couldn't see the lower options bar, but i could scroll my view to it. Now when i look to the Screen and Graphics Preferences window, I have "Model: Plug 'n' Play, Resolution: 1280x1024 @ 50Hz" and i can only select from 50, 51 and 56 Hz. Same in the Screen Resolution window.

My monitor though, shows me that i see 1280x1024 @ 85Hz.

sorry for the late response

Could you please attach the output from the following command:

sudo /usr/sbin/ddcprobe

It seems like your monitor reports wrong resolutions.

It doesn't work for me either. Doesn't allow me to save any settings. My display is fine but this application seems irrelevant to setting up my display. I'm running the latest Gutsy release. If this application is part of the default Gutsy install, users will expect it to work. I'm using a Lenovo 300 N100, a popular laptop for linux. If I can help, please let me know.

Hi
I just wanna draw some attention on this "Screen and Graphics Preferences" issue.

Yesterday I went back to play a little with the settings. Unfortunately, I managed to make my computer unable to boot just by selecting Screen 2 as default.
After I made the change, I logged out but the welcome screen didn't show up. Instead I only had a black screen with a small prompter in the upper left corner. I can't go to a terminal screen (pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1), I can't do anything, although the keyboard is not dead (caps lock led works correctly).

I know this is not a support forum, but I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what file "Screen and Graphics Preferences" edits, and if it's not trivial, what should I change in it to get my system back.

Thanks.

I updated from gutsy yesterday, using a SONY Vaio VGN-TZ27GN. Anyway I have the same problem. Specifically, in the Screen and Graphics Preferences, I select the 1360x768 widescreen LCD panel but the highest resolution that is offered is 1024x768.

I am guessing that this is a bug in the actual program, like some kind of arithmetic mistake. Anyway as a possible short term fix, I propose finding some way of disabling all this easy-to-use stuff and being able to edit xorg.conf manually. Is there any way to do this?

I tried editing /etx/X11/xorg.conf but for some reason nothing seemed to work except at some point X started not working anymore.

I am finally able to get the resolution I want, to to so I had to.
1) Open the Screen and Graphics i.e. displayconfig-gtk
2) Select LCD panel with resolution 1360x768. At this point I am offered resolutions of at most 1024x768.
3) Restart X, i.e. log out and log in. (I'm not sure if this step is necessary.)
4) At this point displayconfig-gtk should have made a new xorg.conf, but which has problems. You should now Backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
5) Next open xorg.conf as root. In Section "Monitor" remove all the modeline lines.
6)In Section "Display" on the Modes line add the resolution and frequency you want.

Please see attached xorg.conf. All the changes I made are preceeded by #<!>.

N.b. One probably shouldn't attempt this for older screens.

Bryce Harrington (bryce) wrote : displayconfig-gtk is deprecated

Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make
Ubuntu better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side
effect of these improvements is that it has rendered several design
assumptions in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we
are no longer putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration
tool, and are putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution
applet. As a result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing
it.
