Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

WIth desktop effects enabled, when shutting down the machine, I don't get the progress bar as usual, but instead I just get a messed up version of my desktop background, with lots of lines and garbled colors. The machine shuts down properly, but it looks really weird and potentially scary/confusing to users.

What graphics card? Are you sure it only happens with compiz? I can't see how compiz could be responsible for this. Maybe a driver problem but then all 3D apps will probably trigger it. What happens when you shutdown when something like tuxracer is running?

You are correct, it was a bad assumption on my part - the problem showed when desktop effects finally started working as it should, but that coincided with the new Nvidia driver - I'm pretty sure it's that driver causing the problem instead.

Please close this as invalid or move to driver package. Sorry for taking up your time. :)

Hi kristoffer-lunden,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

It still persists in Intrepid alpha, but I want to upgrade all the way before I do those logs, and I haven't had the time.

Sorry for not answering, wanted to avoid "spamming" (and I thought I'd be done by now).

Will try to fix this in the weekend.

The problem persists in completely updated version (8.10). Furthermore, since a while back, it does not shut down but simply hangs there and does not respond to any input. I have to kill the machine by holding down the power button.

As usual, is there any reason to believe it has changed with no updates? It's still there, for the record. Annoying automated messages.

For Jaunty we've moved on to -180, and there are no plans to SRU a newer version for Intrepid (as per the SRU team policies, binary proprietary drivers cannot be updated in stable releases.) You can obtain newer versions of this driver from nvidia's site.
