Bug Description

7.10 (Gutsy) - Ubuntu 2.6.22-12.38-generic
Linux tisiphone 2.6.22-12-generic #1 SMP Sat Sep 22 18:14:28 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Press Fn+F4 -> System suspends to RAM
Press Fn -> System resumes with black screen, Fn+F7 or switching to a console doesn't help so you have to reboot the machine by switching to a console blindly and then pressing ctrl+alt+del or by using ssh

Usual logs will follow. Any additional information needed?

I seem to be having this same problem, almost. I was able to get the screen back by pressing Fn+F3 (the combination that turns the screen off) then just the Fn key. Interestingly enough, when I tried it the first two times, the screen was blank. The third time it was not however. When I logged in, network manager listed no wireless networks. I put the computer to sleep a fourth time, and when it woke up the screen was black again. This time I logged in and the nm-applet had crashed. So it looks like they may be related.

This is all with the latest updates installed, as of thirty minutes ago or so, uname -a: Linux conrad 2.6.22-12-generic #1 SMP Sun Sep 23 18:11:30 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Same problem here (T23 with SuperSavage IX/C SDR) - I'm able to recover by closing and re-opening the lid again after resume - seems to be just an issue with screen switching. I also recognize that Fn-F7 does not work with Gutsy while it worked with Feisty. In Feisty I sometimes had to press Fn-F7 to get the display back again after resume.

The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. Also note you can only test Suspend via the LiveCD, not Hibernate. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. We will keep this report open against the actively developed kernel but against 2.6.22 this will be closed. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
