Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-12-generic

I use Gutsy on a Dell Inspiron with 2 processors and I use the standard -generic kernel.

After the latest update to kernel 2.6.22-12, Ubuntu installed beside the right -generic kernel the -386 kernel, too.

So the kernel 2.6.22-12-386 was automatically choosed after restart. With that kernel sound doesn't work, wlan doesn't work. Doesn't wonder with the false kernel.

After rebooted with kernel 2.6.22-12-generic, which was also installed, everthing is OK.

I don't see, why the -386 kernel was installed, I got not meta-packages for this kernel installed!

I got these kernel related metapackages installed:

linux-image-generic
linux-restricted-modules-common
linux-restricted-modules-generic

I don't have packages linux-image-386 installed, nor linux-restricted-modules-386.

I had the same problem. After I removed the -386 version, the system rebooted into the generic version and everything started working again.

Thank you for your reports. Have you updated to the current 2.6.22-14 kernel? If so, did this issue reappear for that update? Thanks.

I also should have added a note that if the -generic kernel flavor works for you and the -386 doesn't, just continue to use the -generic flavor. The main difference between the two is different kernel config options being flipped on/off. For example, the -386 flavor disables SMP support with the -generic flavor enables it. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Now that I think about it, I'm actually going to just close this report as you mentioned the -generic flavor works. However, please continue to report any issues you come accross, we really do appreciate it and value your feedback. Thanks!

Well this shouldn't have been closed: pulling in the wrong kernel during update is a very bad behavior, causing issues like the one mentioned above.
My guess is that the other kernel was used without some required modules, e.g. linux-restricted-modules for that kernel - and therefor sounds got broken somehow.

I'm marking it as a duplicate of bug 188579.
