Bug Description

Binary package hint: sbackup

For those who use an external hard drive for backups, it would be great if sbackup would split the archive files so they are less than the maximum size of the filesystem. For example, if the drive is formatted as FAT32, split the tar files into 4GB chunks automatically.

HI,

There was a blueprints in NSsbackup for this . This functionality requires quite a work . It could be done with an acceptable difficulty if we didn't care about retro-compatibility. see the blueprint here :

Implemented and merged in NSsbackup devel branch .
Note: Split functionality will not be compatible with compression.

This functionality will certainly be used using the new implemented Multi-profile functionality.

I acknowledge that this would be a very useful feature in sbackup. I would also like to backup to a FAT32-formatted external drive, which currently does not work.

It would be great if sbackup could decide automatically on the best way to split up the archives. However, I could also settle for a solution in which the user is given an option to enter the maximal archive size limit. This is the way it is done in the DAR backup utility, for example.
