Bug Description

After upgrading 14.10 -> 15.04 I don't get menu which appeared after right-click on the desktop - nothing happens at all.
Curiously I've seen it once after plugging-unplugging external monitor (apparently it restarted/reinit smth) but this cause some of the running programs to disappear (black screen where firefox used to be but the process is still running).

How can I troubleshoot what's causing it?

Please open a terminal window and run "xfdesktop" manually. Attach any terminal output to this report.

xfdesktop -D --enable-debug
produce no output on the terminal at all although I can see xfdesktop started and I think you're right to assume that it's xfdesktop to blame: when I execute 'xfdesktop -D -R' I can reproduce the same bug with all the windows covered behind black.

Are there any alternatives to xfdesktop I could use instead with xfce DE stack? All I need is just a right-click for applications - no need for fancy wallpapers icons or whatever.

"pcmanfm --desktop" on the contrary behaves perfectly, the only thing left fr me is to find a way to display right-click menu the way it used to be in xfdesktop in 14.10

Lets focus on the actual bug. Does running "killall xfdesktop; xfdesktop --enable-debug" instead generate any debug output?

Furthermore, do you mind testing a newer version of xfdesktop? Either compile git master from source or use the package from my PPA:

No, no debug output produced. I'll give a try to git build and report back. Do I have to update other xfce components or just installing fxdesktop's .deb is enough?

Just installing the .debs in 15.04 should be fine.

The .deb packages from the repo give exactly the same effect - black screen, no debug output.
The version is 4.12.1+git201504261131~ubuntu15.04.1

What's the way to disable broken xfdesktop with pcmanfm? So I can at least have functional desktop - better not having right-click menu for the time being than being stuck with disfunctional desktop capable only drawing black screens.

On a related note - plugging external monitor causes disfunctional xfdesktop to be spawned again even if it was killed and replaced with pcmanfm before. As a workaround - disable automated monitor management by xfce and use something like kscreen instead. As an additional bonus - no meaningless menu pops-up, external monitor simply work.

That sounds really odd. Please attach the session log file ~/.cache/upstart/startxfce4.log to this report and lets see if we can debug this mess.

The log file does not seem to contain any helpful information.

Your issue may be triggered some customized settings specific to your user account. Can you verify that other accounts or the guest session are affected too? Maybe even do a clean install or simply boot into the live session to confirm the bug.

Is there a way to track down exact setting causing it? More importantly - is there a way to completely replace xfdesktop with pcmanfm as a workaround? How exactly monitor settings program knows that it have to spawn xfdesktop every time new monitor being used? Is there some .desktop file or some dconf setting?

I'd appreciate help with more elaborate workaround than 'chmod -x /usr/bin/xfdesktop'
