Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

since version 6.7.192 the analog output of my radeon 9700 on the dvi-i connector (with dvi->vga adapter) is broken.

i use only one monitor, it's connected to the dvi-i port with adapter and vga-cable. when gdm comes up (i can hear the sound) the screen stays completely black. after switching to tty1 and back to X the image is displayed, but at very bad quality. its much too bright and bright areas cast bright "shadows" to the right. lowering gamma does not fix this.
if i use the card's vga-connector instead of dvi+adapter it works as intended and quality is ok, but as the analog signal on dvi used to be of better quality, i'd like to continue using it.

i found this via google and i think it describes the same problem: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2007-September/028228.html

this problem still exists in 6.7.194, tested with xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.194-1ubuntu1tv_i386.deb from http://ppa.launchpad.net/tormodvolden/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-ati/

ps: analog output on dvi-i worked fine with 6.6.x

Can you try to disable the TV output in xorg.conf?
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2007-August/027657.html

Please also attach Xorg.0.log

There's now a "-tv2" version out in my ppa, but I don't expect anything to have changed for your issue. Alex said he might do some LVDS work in the weekend, in which case there'll be a -tv3 soon.

the entries at the end are probably caused by switching to tty1 and back.

in case you wonder:
i made dvi and vga use the same monitor section by setting
 Option "Monitor-DVI-0" "Generic Monitor"
 Option "Monitor-VGA-0" "Generic Monitor"

this does _not_ affect the problem.

here's Xorg.0.log with
 Option "DefaultConnectorTable"

which makes the driver report dvi-i as port0, but doesn't change the problem either.

Did you try without an xorg.conf ? And please attach the complete xorg.conf corresponding to the log above.

Can you please file a bug upstream? According to the discussion you linked to, they should have an idea.

I can see the output being detected in your log, but I can't tell if something is wrong here:

Add my vote.
Radeon 9200SE PCI 128MB
DVI with VGA adapter for monitor
..currently using the VESA driver :(

Again, the problem only showed up after upgrading to gutsy.

Right now, we're getting a VGA cable shipped up here to Anchorage, Alaska with some other of our things to quickly remedy our problem.
..Ironic.

Is the Radeon driver still under heavy development? Is there a chance that it will match Windows performance ever?

Yes, the future looks bright. I wouldn't have been so optimistic some months ago, but recently AMD/ATI started to release specifications, and they just hired the main radeon driver developer to do open-source work with them.

It would help if you open a bug upstream and get into a direct debugging dialog with the developers. We can also forward bugs, but it's most efficient when the people seeing the bug also follow up on them.

For testing the newest upstream development, Ubuntu packages are posted on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge

I don't know if this will fix this specific issue, but I've backported a bunch of high importance patches that upstream recommended, that fix problems sort of like this one, so I think it would be worth the time to test. Please try this .deb and report what you find:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/ati/

If we can determine that the patches in this deb fix this bug, they may be candidates for backporting to Hardy.

Uhhh.. I'm currently using this desktop machine as a dual seat rig. ..so uh...

I'm not set up to use any 3d acceleration whatsoever. ..I am getting
output from both the VGA and DVI out of the card though, on Ubuntu
Hardy..

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.

When I logged out and back in, I found gdm still uses the incorrect resolution.
gdm and gnome of course should use the /same/ resolution of course,
this isn't gentoo, we don't need seperate driver settings for each
user.

@ethana2, your issue with gdm having a different resolution is not this bug report.

@Marcus, no.

Thanks Tormod.

I tried this Live CD, but it was a no go. The console worked fine at 1600x1200@85, but as soon
as X started, the monitor went into power save. Switching to a text VT worked, but switching
back to VT7 again gave me power save mode. I'm attaching the X log.

Using video=ofonly gave the same result, except now the console was low-resolution, low-refresh,
contained nothing, and I couldn't switch back to it from X.

Marcus, I am not sure you have the exact same issue as the original reporter. Can you please open a new bug for this and attach your files there?

Marcus Comstedt (marcus-mc) wrote :

Well, the symptoms are the same as the original reporter (no working analog video on DVI-I).
It's a bit difficult to know a priori which issues are exactly the same...
But there is also e.g. bug 340940, should I attach the logs there?

Yes, it is often difficult to say if it is the same bug, so therefore filing separate bugs is better since they can be merged later. On the other hand dealing with two different bugs in one report gets messy. So please file a new bug.
