Bug Description

I am running Ubuntu Gutsy. After an upgrade, during last week, I lost the sound.

The little speaker icon in the upper right corner has an additional red mark on it, and when i double click it, I get the followin message: "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.".

I searched the forum, and there are several people who found this problem.

This is what I get when I double-click the speaker icon for the first time.
After the first time, when I double-click the icon again, I only get the small window.

Thanks for your report. Which sound card do you have? The sound works fine for me, that's probably another issue. Are you in the right groups?

I looked into Sysinfo 0.7 and it says under Multimedia Audio Controller:
-nVidia Corporation MCP55 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
-Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Unknown device 81f6

What do you mean by right groups?

I have the same bug. I was on Feitsy with no problems, then when i upgraded to Gutsy with update-manager -d, this bug appear.
lspci is : Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
It seams that a lot of people have no sound, no audio group and no /dev/dsp/ and /dev/esd directory depending of the version of linux kernel, width Intel audio card (and other cards, if i read this topic...).

Is this bug a knowing bug ? I don't understand why is on a Low Importance, with status incomplete and no assigned because you can find this bug repport on many board at many date.

J'ai le même bug. J'était sous Feisty sans jamais n'avoir eu aucun problême, puis lorsque je suis passé à Gutsy avec update-manager -d, ce bug est apparu.
mon lspci : Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

That's not likely a gstreamer bug, likely the soundcard is not correctly handled by alsa or linux

I also upgrade from feisty to gutsy and no longer have my onboard sound device working properly.
What is the best output for me to get and post here to help diagnose?

I couldn't reach my computer for the past 2 weeks, but the latest update fixed my sound problem.
So, as far as I'm concerned, this bug can be closed.

woops - after more reading of similar problems, I found that I had removed myself from the 'audio' /etc/group. I added myself and now I have sound.

I am having the same exact problem, I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 and just updated to Hardy Heron 8.04 and have no sound. Tried many things to try and get it to work, software downloads galore and nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I am new to the Linux environment so if I don't get something right away please be patient, I am learning as fast as I can.

Steve - run alsamixer from a command line shell and make sure your outputs are not muted, e.g., anything with MM at the bottom of the bar is muted. Tab to that bar and use 'M' to toggle the mute state.

I ended up doing just a fresh install off of a cd since I had no configurations or files that I could not live without. The problem has been corrected by doing this.
