Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Entering the the word 'cna' without quotes, OOo Calc auto corrects it to 'can'. Auto Correct has been disabled on the toolbar, yet it keeps on auto correcting our spelling???
Our work-around was to delete the 'cna' auto correct entry from the correction list. Though the bug still remains. Why does Calc auto correct when we explicitly disabled the auto correct feature!

Hi,

can you look at the autocorrect options in Tools->Autocorrect->Options : is the "use replacement table" checkbox checked ?

   thanks,

A related bug to the auto correct functions.
If a decimal number is entered with a dot instead of a comma OOo calc replaces the decimal number with a date regardless if auto correct is on or off.
19.4 gets replaced to the date 2019-04-01

The only workaround to disable the number auto correction for 19.4 is to select a language in Tools->Language Settings->Languages "Locale Setting" that supports using a dot instead of a comma for decimal numbers like Swahili.

at Xerxes, please open a new bug for your problem

at Graeme, what do you mean with "disabled autocorrect feature" ?
what do you mean "autocorrect has been disabled on the toolbar" ?
I can only see a button for autospellcheck which is something different
please include a screenshot

  thanks,

Okay, I got the terms wrong I guess. It's the "auto spellcheck" that was disabled on the toolbar palette. The icon with "ABC" and a checkmark.

Auto Spellcheck vs AutoCorrect. To me they are the same thing. I'm trying to spell a word in a cell and OOo keeps changing my spelling. As I mentioned, I type 'cna' (without the quotes) and press enter. OOo changes that to 'can' (without the quotes). We use a English-UK dictionary. I disabled "auto spellcheck" (now that I got the correct terms from the toolbar palette hint) which seems like the logical thing to fix this problem, and yet OOo still keeps changing my spelling.

Logically by disabling "auto spellcheck" I, and a few others that tried this in our office, would have thought that OOo will not interfere with our typing, but it still does. It seems "AutoCorrect" is always enabled and is not disabled when we explicitly told it not to interfere. AutoCorrect should also be disabled when "Auto Spellcheck" is disabled.

Hi Graeme,

autospellcheck and autocorrect are two distinct functionalities

autospellcheck simply underlines an incorrectly spelled word with a red wavy line based on a dictionary and does not change what has been typed
while autocorrect automatically corrects common typing mistakes based on a replacement table

to disable autocorrect you need to go in Tools->Autocorrect->Options, there is no toolbar button I know off that does this

Hi Graeme,

I just had a look at the openoffice bug tracker
there are a few feature requests open to make autocorrect more user friendly which you might want to support by voting for them

  a "disable autocorrect button" : http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=49175
an "pop-up message allowing user to disable autocorrect when autocorrect has taken place" http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=67533

Hi Koen,

Thank you for those links. I will have a look at them. I guess we can consider this bug report as closed due to my misunderstanding, assuming AutoCorrect and Auto Specllcheck are the same thing.

Graeme.
