Bug Description

Binary package hint: emacs-goodies-el

The 'gnus-alias.el' package is comparable to, but rather more nicely coded than, the 'gnus-pers.el' included in the package. The package is discussed here: http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/GnusAlias

The upstream source is: http://www.northbound-train.com/emacs.html#MyPackages

The package is GPL 2 licensed and quite effective.

It would be best to file this bug over at Debian. We basically pull what they have. Let me know if/when you do, and which Debian bug number the new request has, and I'll add it to this bug for tracking purposes.

I cannot file Debian bugs, since I don't agree with their requirements to submit bugreports. (No need to discuss the details).

However, I agree that GnusAlias is a must. Would it make sense to alternately make a separate package for it?

I would suggest a separate package, as emacs-goodies-el is not well maintained. I'm intrigued by the idea that you would use a Debian-based distribution but not wish to submit bug reports against Debian, but if it's just a personal preference, I could step in and submit the RFP bug. However, I'm not familiar with gnus-alias, so a quick rundown in private mail would be useful.

Oops, might make sense for gnus-bonus-el as opposed to emacs-goodies-el. Changing "Affects" on the theory that this was misfiled by accident.

Oops, that was wrong too -- gnus-bonus-el is built from the emacs-goodies-el source.

And finally this, major enormous foot in big old mouth. Mea maxima culpa. I was mixing this package with another. I'm very sorry if I upset somebody with this misdirected comment.

Actually, in the case of gnus-bonus-el, I would agree that it isn't well-maintained. I inherited the package with the rest of emacs-goodies-el but don't use gnus myself. A few people have volunteered in the past to maintain that section of emacs-goodies-el (for bugs) but all have dropped out for lack of time. I would be happy for someone to take over gnus-bonus-el, either simply in alioth within the emacs-goodies-el source package, or taking it out of emacs-goodies-el completely (that way it wouldn't get needless version bumbs all the time).

Many Emacs packages seems to suffer from the fact, that many Debian developers seems to prefer VI-clones, and hence doesn't care much for the Emacs-packages.

Is this still a problem for the current version of Ubuntu?
