The prefered browser is custom with the command line "mozilla-firefox %s". Similar for the mail reader.
I now changed that to the Firefox entry and it works again. Was the name of the binary changed with gutsy?

I had the same problem - they closed it "not a bug".
Go to Gnome Control Center/Preferred Applications and set the default
browser again. Gutsy nukes that setting.

open any link.

I had the same problem: Kubuntu 7.10, Thunderbird 2.0.0.6, preferred browser: Firefox (2.0.0.8). Thunderbird didn't open weblinks anymore.
I found the solution in: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=502651 (Rui Pais).
Why does this not happen by default, as it did in 7.04?

Because mozilla changed from mozilla-thunderbird, to thunderbird, and the symlinks didn't all change.
