no logon sound

Bug Description
After Logon, gnome does not play the logon sound. As well, the logoff sound is not played.
i'm using ubuntu 8.10 so please help me....
and i have onther problem that when i go to youtube i can't here any sounds .. i have to close all firefox web browser and any audio program then i have to open the firefox web browser...
soo what can i do plz any one help me
The attention sound during the logon screen is played though
