I was able to replicate this bug.

The fix appears to be to modify a line in the '/usr/sbin/nessus-update-plugins-gpl' script. The fetch_cmd option should be changed from simply calling wget to 'fetch_cmd="/usr/bin/wget"' using the absolute path. Once this change is made, the updates proceed without issue.

So that it is not necessary to hardcode the full path to every program in Ubuntu, we provide a standard search path via the PATH environment variable. This is why you can type "wget" at a command prompt and have the program run. The bug is more likely in the test which checks to see whether wget is available.

According to http://list.nessus.org/pipermail/nessus/2007-May/016894.html , the URL for the all-2.0.tar.gz file has moved to:

http://www.nessus.org/all-2.0-gpl.tar.gz

It is not there, either, unfortunately. I've tried several variants of the recommended URL, with no luck.

However, according to that post, the version of Nessus that is in synaptic (2.2.9-2), has been end-of-lifed by Tenable, and new plugins won't work with any older versions (including the one in use by Ubuntu). They're saying everyone needs to upgrade to 2.2.10.

Are there plans to upgrade Nessus to 2.2.10 for Ubuntu 8.04?
