***
What helps (workaround - autodetect utilz (which one does it?) should DO THIS!):
edit xorg.conf
Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Configured Mouse"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "CorePointer"
    Option "Device" "/dev/gpmdata" ## you need to install package gpm
    #Option "Protocol" "IntelliMouse"
    #Option "Protocol" "Logitech"
    #Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
    Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
    Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
***
This one helps for LTSP thin clients:
        #X_MOUSE_DEVICE = "/dev/psaux"
        X_MOUSE_PROTOCOL = "ExplorerPS/2"
        X_MOUSE_RESOLUTION = 800
        X_MOUSE_BUTTONS = 10
        X_MOUSE_ZAXMAPPING = "4 5"
        X_MOUSE_BUTTONMAPPING = "1 2 3 6 7 4 5"
##***
        X_USBMOUSE_PROTOCOL = "ExplorerPS/2"
        X_USBMOUSE_RESOLUTION = 800
        X_USBMOUSE_BUTTONS = 10
        X_USBMOUSE_ZAXMAPPING = "4 5"
        X_USBMOUSE_BUTTONMAPPING = "1 2 3 6 7 4 5"

Why the "workaround" or editing xorg.conf is NOT enough::
1. U have usual 2B mouse on COM1 & u plug in USB MX500
2. u have basic 3B PS/2 mouse & touchpad on laptop & u plug in wireless bluetooth MX-900
3. you have plugged M$ Explorer mouse & Genius scrolll mouse - you plug them both off, then you plug in wireless MX 518 or wifi laser MX-1000
4. etc. aso.
5. if you tell one computer, one mouse ... : I'll tell you: ... one OS, eine Sprache, ein Reich, ein Fuehrer

There is USB for Plug&Play (not pray), it works(!) (if xorg.conf is OK), and all above situations work on all win* OS.

A. IMH!O thiziz NOT a whislist. Its a bug. Mouse without ANY configuration is NOT working (not all functions), so its (medium?) bug, not a wishlist.

I will NOT fight against you, but I can NOT agree:
* Affects FF Gutsy very much. I think "most clicks" on these "extra buttons" are in FF for BACK/FORWARD (if we forget games). Not OOo, not any desktop.
* I'm NOT telling this IS FF bug. I'm pointing that it affects FF very bad - unusual behaviour, because (BFU will see it like: its Gutsy problem! Ubuntu s*cks). And with mouse for $50 or $150 u need to click buttons, which is NOT needed in 2K/XP/"any distro which admin has corrected and NOT used default settings"
