Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic

My DVB-T stick (Terratec Cinergy T USB XE) does not work on a plain Feisty install due to missing driver and firmware.

After every kernel update, I have to check out and compile the Video4Linux repository:

hg clone http://linuxtv.org/hg/~manu/af9005
make
sudo make install

I also have to download the firmware from http://ventoso.org/luca/af9005/af9005.fw and copy it to /lib/firmware/<kernel>.

Also, every time I boot the PC I have to unplug and plug in again the stick to make the required modules properly load.

Hi,

Sorry for the delayed response. You said you are running Feisty, however this bug report is against the Gusty kernel packages. Just curious if this issue exists in Gutsy? Thanks.

Hi Dennis,

The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It looks like it has the af9005 driver included. It would be helpful if you could test the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. We'll keep this open against the actively developed kernel but against 2.6.22 this will be closed. Thanks.

OK, I tested with the Kubuntu (KDE 4) Alpha 6 Live CD. The required modules are indeed included and load just fine. I was not able to determine whether the firmware was installed or available in some package, however, or actually test the DVB stick. But I'm sure it will work, however I might have to manually throw in the firmware file.

Hi Dennis,

Just curious if you were able to test the DVB stick and if you had to manually load the firmware? I didn't see the firmware in the linux-ubuntu-modules package so I'm guessing you had to install it manually. Let us know. Thanks.

Leann,

I have the same device and to can confirm that to get this to work you have to copy http://ventoso.org/luca/af9005/af9005.fw into /lib/firmware/<kernel version>/ every time the kernel is updated. this is in hardy beta (latest), have seen this problem since gutsy.

please add the firmware to the firmware distribution if possible as many cheap usb sticks use this chipset. I got mine on ebay around a year ago for ~£10,

p.s. kaffiene works great with this stick to view tv, may need to use tzap to scan for channels though. haven't tried the remote but the driver supports it.

Hi Guys,

It looks like this is still unresolved. I'm migrating this forward for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. Note that starting with the Intrepid cycle, the linux-ubuntu-modules has actually been merged into the linux kernel source so bugs that were previously filed against linux-ubuntu-modules will now be against linux. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

@Pete Graner & co:
as per my suggestion in the closely related Bug #458952 - wouldn't it be possible to package up all those little firmwares similarly to the way one currently treats the Broadcom wifi chipsets using the "fwcutter" package(s)? I had a very positive experience installing the Karmic RC on a laptop with a Broadcom wifi chipset (system identified the "troublesome" HW and offered to download + install the firmware for me -- surely a similar solution could be implemented for AF9005 and ec168 firmwares?
