Binary package hint: gnome-panel

THe error I get is: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I think this is not a bug, and the last time you updated your system it was interrupted, have you opened a console and run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' followed by 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' to straighten this out yet?
