This should have been either a result of my attempting to open CrossFTP from Firefox with Java6 or installation of some Java files through Adept.

see apt-cache show sun-java6-doc, follow these intructions and try to reinstall.

Sorry for the late reply, just tried the instructions and it produced a
negative affirmation; sun-java6-doc does not contain the bug (unless it was
fixed in a recent update).
