Bug Description

Binary package hint: alsa-base

When I listen to music using for example Amarok (xine engine), and I do something processor intensive (such as scrolling some complex web page in Firefox), the sound starts to break (I hear pops and clicks - probably because of empty buffers in alsa), and if it continues for a long time (longer than a minute or so), the sound locks (repeats the same buffer) until I stop all applications using alsa. It happens with any application using ALSA with or without dmix.

I'm using:
alsa-base and alsautils 1.0.14.1 (from beta release)
linux 2.6.22-12-generic

Sound card is:
00:0f.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 02) - 1274:5880
And my motherboard is with VIA KT133 chipset.

It is happening only in Gutsy with this alsa version.
In Feisty, with updated kernel 2.6.22-11-generic and alsa 1.0.13 everything works like it should.

I can confirm this bug, I always have this jerky sound in Gutsy. The problem was not present in Feisty.

Ok, it seems to be a problem of pci-latency. Using
sudo setpci -v -s '*:*' latency_timer=40
sudo setpci -v -s '0:0' latency_timer=0
improves the sound quality significantly on my pc.

Not a driver issue.

Changed in alsa-driver:
