Bug Description

I got a new laptop and I tried to install ubuntu 7.10beta,but I cannot boot the live-cd-system.I tried several times, once I saw the background of the system, but it stopped there.
Then I tried the alternate install CD,while installing the screen became blocks of colors, but it was installing,I saw the blocks jumping. Finally the install finished(i guess so,because I cannot see the words),restarted my pc.It was still a very long time(around a hour),but I cannot see the xwindows and gnome, the screen was black.

I tried opensuse yesterday,it works well.

I don't know what's wrong with my laptop,it is acer 6252(http://www.acer.com.cn/product/spec/index.asp?id=237).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
It looks like your problem may consist of two separate problems:
1. The colored blocks during installation
2. The problems after reboot.

The first problem was a known problem which was solved shortly after the beta cd's were released. Could you please try the installation with a more recent alternate cd? I think you may want to use the release candidate cd, which is expected this Thursday, but you can also use one of the daily releases.
For the second problem, it is not completely certain you completed the installation successfully, so I think it is best to re-test that also with a more recent CD.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks for your reply.I tried 7.10-rc-alternate today, the first problem was solved, but the second was still a big problem for me.

After installation finished and reboot, the system took a long time when loading manual drivers, and the stop when checking file systems

I wrote down the output to a paper,it is ass bellow:

Loading kernel modules...
Loading manual drivers... [OK] //took a long time, around 10 minutes
Activating swap [OK]
Checking root file system...
fsck 1.40.2 (12-Jul-2007)
/dev/sda8:clean,........ ... //took a very long time,around 20 to 30 minutes

                                    [OK]
*checking file systems
fsck 1.40.2 (12-Jul-2007) //2 hours past,it was still here

UBUNTU is the best OS I 've seen for pc,it works very well in my old hp-compaq v3118 laptop,so I hope the new version can drive my new laptop well.

It looks like fsck wants to check another partition, but fails to do so. Can you please list the partitions you have on your system and what is on it (i.e. windows or other linux versions). If you know, please add the filesystem (i.e. ntfs, fat, linux) type to the list.

Secondly, can you please try to boot in recovery mode? You can select recovery mode from the grub menu. If you didn't see the grub menu, you will need to press escape when grub is started (you should see a message about that). Please report the last messages if this stops.
When the system asks for a root password, just press ctrl+D and see if you get the login screen.

I tried the final release of 710(alternate),it stopped when preparing ubuntu-docs.I tried another time,it seemed cannot load the installation program.
I give up,maybe the hardware is too special. But I will expect the 8.04 version, hope the problem disappears magically.

I am sorry to hear it still doesn't work for you. Hopefully the next release will give you more luck.
As we will not be able to debug this further, I will close this bug report now.
If you find any time to do further testing, don't hesitate to file other bugs or re-open this bug.

I am having the same problems with a similar machine. I read somewhere that I should do it with noacpi mode. I am booting now at the moment with this option and it is also taking so much time.

Everything went fine until
*Configuring network interfaces...[OK]
init: tty3 main process ended, respawning
init: tty2 main process ended, respawning
init: tty1 main process ended, respawning
init: tty6 main process ended, respawning

After several research I found a way to install ubuntu on it.

I had to do a vga=352 acpi=off and noapic

But I would like these options that I turned off to function later on. Is there a way to do that?

I wonder if something is doing something about this problem, I still have my machine suffering and crying to remove Vista from it but alas it is the only OS that recognizes all its hardware and I bought all the hardware not part of it.

I've tried 8.04alpha4 these days.It works,although not very well.

rzerrou and jeeks might want to try.
