fancontrol crippled by upgrade to gutsy

Bug Description

On upgrading to gutsy beta, fancontrol stopped working. When I try to start it from the command line it tells me "No sensors found!"

lsmod tells me that w83627hf is loaded, which I believe is the module in question, but to be honest I can't remember any more. It's an asus p4p800-se motherboard that I've got, in case someone else knows.

Anyway, the problem is that setting up fancontrol was a PITA to begin with because I had to google and do something on the command line I really can't remember now, so I've got to do the whole thing all over again. Fancontrol ought to work straight out of the box, but if it doesn't then at least users should be spared having to set it up more than once, rather than after every distribution upgrade.

Structure of /sys changed, edit /usr/sbin/fancontrol and change line

SDIR=/sys/bus/i2c/devices

to

SDIR=/sys/bus/platform/devices

then check where in /sys/bus/platform/devices the pwm and temp files for your chipset are, edit /etc/fancontrol to match this.
In my case that meant changing

FCTEMPS=9191-0290/pwm2=9191-0290/temp2_input 9191-0290/pwm1=9191-0290/temp3_input
[...]

to

FCTEMPS=w83627hf.656/pwm2=w83627hf.656/temp2_input w83627hf.656/pwm1=w83627hf.656/temp3_input
[...]

Good luck!

Unfortunately I'm not using the machine in question any more. However the real problem is that fancontrol did not get configured on installing a distribution (Feisty) or on a distribution upgrade (Gutsy). If this hasn't been specifically fixed since then, then it is still a as much a problem as it ever was.

What needs to happen is for the user to be presented with the option to calibrate sensors during installation. There should also be a calibrate-sensors gui accessible from the gnome system-->administration menu.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
