Using Ubuntu 7.10 I was able to convert a docx file to odt without problems. Does this happen for you on all docx files or just one in particular. If it is just one can you attach the document?

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

Just encountered this one myself. Seeing how one can lose a lot of work (having done just that), I'd argue for a higher importance value.

It is nice if it works. But I agree with the priority actually.

Some docx files will never be fully supported. For example because they require patented microsoft technology. That is: even if we were able to support it, it wouldn't be legal.

Also, the case with activeX .. supporting those in docx would require wine. Full blown windows emulation.
Please tell those who supply docx files to use a more universal format: PDF/ODF .. or even a normal .DOC

This bug is about saving what you can see on screen as .odt (not as .doc), this bug is not about parsing or reading a .docx file.

I guess two possible failures: openoffice get an invalid state after reading this .docx file, or openoffice get an invalid state while writing an .odt file. This is the reason for reporting this bug, not cause I expect a perfect import of a .docx file.

My mistake. It should be higher priority then.

To clarify my above comment: the behavior is I'm describing is that you may do some arbitrary amount of work (in my case, an hour or so) and then find that you can't save your document. The error message is pretty cryptic, so I had thought I was encountering a weird permissions issue and eventually gave up after trying a few different locations. I discovered too late that had I only saved it as a Microsoft Word document instead of an Open Office Document it works (say it ain't so! The MICROSOFT format works better?!). I have since set my default format to Word and have not encountered this bug again. The DocX import was flawless, by the way - I was mightily impressed.

Anyway, I would humbly suggest that we indicate in the error message that one might try to save in a format OTHER than .ODT.

I believe that this bug has been corrected in Ubuntu hardy openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3 so I am marking it as Fix Released. If after upgrading you continue to have problems with this issue then feel free to reopen this bug.

Thanks,
