Bug Description

Binary package hint: dolphin

In Dolphin it is not possible (or at least not possible by any guessable means) to browse samba shares that have not announced themselves on the network, i.e. by entering "smb://name-or-ip-address-of-server". Since Dolphin has been appointed default file manager in Kubuntu Gutsy in place of Konqueror, this amounts to a regression, especially since samba shares in Ubuntu don't announce themselves by default (or at least they don't on the systems in our house). Among other things it makes the system menu applet pretty useless for network file management.

I have the same problem. Konqueror undastands "\\networkplace\folder" as "smb://networkplace/folder" automatically, but Dolphin requires full adress. It is not "user-friendly"))

Is this still an issue with the KDE4 version of Dolphin?

on a network with windows XP and vista machines sharing folders and an Ubuntu samba server sharing folders they are not visible in dolphin from the remote places>samba shares (nor are they visible in konqueror).
The workgroups are visible but dolphin reports a time out if I click a workgroup.
if I enter smb://workgroup again there is a time out
if I enter smb://workgroup/hostname there is a timeout
if I enter smb://workgoup/ip there is a timeout
if I enter smb://ip the shared folders show up
coincidentally (or perhaps not coincidentally) the printer install wizard will not detect shared windows printers but will install them if the ip is given and they then work fine so maybe the problem is in the samba client not in dolphin or konqueror
(is sort of goes without saying that the shared folders all show up on the windows computers)

As far as I know, this has to do with Ubuntu, not Dophin. Winbind must be installed and 'wins' must be put before 'dns' in /etc/nsswitch.conf in order to browse samba shares using netbios names.

+1 for Coman Mihai's comment above. I wish the nsswitch fix were better publicized, because this bug page shows up low in Google when searching for various combinations of "kubuntu", "samba", "dolphin", "shares", etc. I added "wins" before "dns" to the hosts line in /etc/nsswitch.conf and Dolphin/Konqueror worked perfectly.

Using Kubuntu 9.10. The default install worked fine, but after I upgraded all the bug fix packages today it broke.

Same here, Kubuntu 9.04.

In Dolphin If you try to browse the network via Samba Shares it displays the Workgroup icon double click on it and nothing, just a blank window.

In Konqueror if you enter smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where xxx is the IP address of the computer you are browsing it correctly displays the shares. Likewise if you enter the ip address of the computer you are trying to browse in Dolphin.

Entering the computer name in Dolphin just displays a blank window even if you enter the share name. The same can be reproduced in Konqueror therefore I can only assume that samba network browsing is broken in KDE4 and you are limited to browsing by IP address which is hardly a step in the right direction when it comes to user experience.
