Bug Description

Last updated kubuntu gutsy (2007-10-07)
HW: Laptop compaq presario series 2500
____________________________________________

*Summary*

Installing irda-utils (and openobex-apps) causes:
    - infra-red stuff does not work (ali_ircc does not load)
    - system does not enter X when rebooting remaining completely frozen

*Cronological description*

1. I installed irda-utils

2. Run related irda scripts (installed in /etc/init.d)

3. Could not get irxfer or ircp to work

4. lsmod did not show ali_ircc module, so I did
       modprobe ali_ircc
and got the following message:
FATAL: Error inserting ali_ircc
(/lib/modules/2.6.22-13-generic/kernel/drivers/net/irda/ali-ircc.ko): No
such device

5. dmesg shows:
[ 1280.232000] NET: Registered protocol family 23
[ 1361.760000] ali-ircc, driver loaded (Benjamin Kong)
[ 1361.760000] ali_ircc_open(), can't get iobase of 0x2f8
[ 1393.228000] IrCOMM protocol (Dag Brattli)
[ 1478.052000] ali-ircc, driver loaded (Benjamin Kong)
[ 1478.052000] ali_ircc_open(), can't get iobase of 0x2f8
[ 1521.320000] usb 3-3: USB disconnect, address 2
[ 1585.580000] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[ 1608.680000] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

6. lsmod | grep ir shows:
ircomm 23812 0
irda 202300 1 ircomm
crc_ccitt 3072 1 irda

7. Rebooting after this (choosing NO SPLASH)
I could see an apparently normal reboot until the point (not absolutely
sure here) kdm launches X.
The screen became all black (no cursor) and the keyboard became
completly frozen, even the kernel magic combinations (alt+prt sc+{s,u,b})!

8. I pressed power off button for 5 secs, booted from another partition,
entered the previous system using chroot and uninstalled irda-tools
using aptitude.

After this I could reboot the system again.

9. I tried all of this several times. So, it is always reproducible.

Regards.

I confirm! Absolutely the same situation here in my HP Compaq NC4000 with Ubuntu Gusty Tribe 5 updated. System stops something about "gdm"-box starting. BUT when I am resetting my computer 2-3 times I can load system finding out crappy logs filled with non-readable symbols... When I delete irda-utils in Synaptic - everything becomes normal after reboot.

I have customized the current kernel to my needs plus some options, needed to build the ubuntu-modules package, and the problem went away! Unfortunately I can't determine which parameter(s) caused this problem. Reinstalling the original package (original config) causes the problem to come back.
Hope this could somehow help.

I confirm the same situation in Hardy with a Dell Latitude D810. I was successful at using the irda-utils in Gutsy, but had this result when I did a fresh install of Hardy. When I install it irda-utils through command line, I receive the message below:

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 RC or later?
