[gutsy] installed kernel doesn't boot on this cpu

Bug Description

I install this:
ubuntu-7.10-beta-server-i386.iso
on this:
VIA EPIA-EK10000G, Luke/1000Mhz, Mini-IT DDR-400, SATA, VGA, Lyd, 2xLAN, USB2.0
and on boot after install, it says something like
KERNEL PANIC: cpu too old for this kernel
I believe I didn't do any awkward choices during the setup.

Shouldn't the correct kernel be installed automatically?
I really hope it's the correct iso image.

Thanks for the attention and the OS.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in linux-source-2.6.22

I confirm the same issue when installing from the Gutsy 7.10 Server Edition CD on a VIA EPIA-M10000 (should be same cpu/chipset of the EK10000G).

The install goes fine but at the first reboot I get the "cpu too old" message. The kernel image is linux-image-2.6.22-14-server.

I booted from a livecd, chroot in the install, installed linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic.

Booting with that kernel works without problems, so the issue really is with the -server kernel image, not with the 2.6.22 sources.

Don't know if it could be related, but a similar problem exists with 6.06.1 LTS, the 'server' kernel won't boot (this time without any message, it just freeze) and the 686 kernel works.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for the kernel version the bug was submitted about. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, it would be helpful if you could test with the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
