Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Latest Compiz core (git20071006) update causes a crash when activating any screen edge with the mouse (top right, bottom right, top left, bottom left). This seems to only happen when Desktop Cube is enabled. I haven't been able to reproduce crash with Wall enabled. This is a recent bug and has not happened since running 7.10 beta.

I am running the Gutsy beta version and have the same problem. Cf: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3498467 for confirmation in Gutsy.

I have had the same problem and boy am I vex. I spent a lot of time getting my desktop just how I wanted it.
I downloaded the last set of updates and pow! my beautiful 3d cube desktop is broken.
It initiates on logon ok bu as soon as I try to rotate the desktop it just reverts to a non-3d, non transparent, non rotating desktop. I fine that in "Apperances" it is set to no effects and if I change it (to custom) and reload my effects profile, I only have to rotate my mouse wheel or move to the edge of the screen for it to revert again :(
I ran compiz --replace and got this.............

Note that the fix suggested in the forum thread I posted above seems to solve the issues about Compiz crashing immediately when the cursor touches the screen edge. That fix involves disabling screen edge action bindings for the "Rotate Flip Right" and "Rotate Flip Left". However, even after disabling those actions, I have a problem with the scale plugin. If the scale plugin is initiated by a screen edge or corner, compiz crashes as soon as a window is selected. It seems that there are no problems with the scale plugin when it is activated by a keybinding (mine is Shift + Alt + Up) that does not involve a screen corner.

Surely the point of the matter is that you shouldnt have to disable anything that you had running before an update.
My desktop was fine until that last 59 package update and since then (please see above)........

Yeah, Expo and Scale work fine with key bindings (Super + 'E' and Shift -Alt -Up). It seems specific to the screen edges causing the crashes now.

I dont have to go anywhere near my screen edges. One revolution of my mouse wheel crashes it. (The mouse wheel is what I use to rotate the cube.)

It's doing it with Wall as well, specifically when Edge Flip DnD is activated, so it seems specific to screen edges. I'm sure a fix is in the works.

I wouldn't be so sure. One thing I notice happens when it trips out is that System/Apperance/Visual Effects gets reset to "none" anytime it happens. Setting it back to custom brings everything back however any attempt to rotate the cube, either by mouse wheel, cursor left or right+ctrl+alt, or moving to screen edges causes it. Like I said before, this was not so before the last round of upgrades, in which I noticed there was an update for compiz and its relations.................
