Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Seen in: Dapper, Feisty, Gutsy. I started with Dapper (Moved from Debian) and avoided Edgy.

Laptop: It will drain the battery, spin up the fans, etc.

In this specific case, I noticed it because I need about 90% of my P3 933Mhz system to watch some higher resolution videos with vlc or totem and had several second video skips (even though gnome-video-thumbnailer is niced) when watching a video.

Interim solution: Switch to a different directory that doesn't have downloading videos. This won't help if you happen to be downloading the video to the desktop though.

Proposed solution: If a file has been modified previously in the last N seconds and has been modified again, do not attempt to thumbnail the file.

Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported, but feel free to report any other bugs you find.

What you describe is what nautilus is supposed to do actually

"2005-05-08 Martin Wehner <email address hidden>

 * libnautilus-private/nautilus-thumbnails.c:
 (thumbnail_thread_start):
Don't try to thumbnail files which have been modified in the
last few seconds to avoid constantly re-thumbnailing them.
Current cool-off period is three seconds. Fixes bug #107418."

Maybe there is something buggy in the code or your download sometime stop for over 3 seconds?

nautilus 1:2.20.0-0ubuntu6

I can reproduce this on my system with a default install on every ubuntu release I've used (dapper, feisty, gutsy).

Here are the steps to reproduce:
1. wget http://mirror.linux.org.au/linux.conf.au/2007/video/tuesday/tuesday_1100_GNOME.ogg
2. view directory with nautilus file browser
3. Watch cpu usage

I can see the size and modified time count and see gnome-video-thumbnailer being executed.

Changed in nautilus:
status: Invalid → New

Another workload to consider is sparse files like those created by azureus so change in file size should not be taken into account.

I didn't close the bug because it's not correct but because that's a duplicate, I'm too busy right now to look at the bug number though, if somebody else want to do that and mark this one duplicate you are welcome, the title might be something about video thumbnail using cpu
