No way in Rhythmbox to refresh/update music library after moving/renaming/updating tags in songs

Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

After changing the names of folders in my music library, or updating tags the updates don't show up in Rhythmbox, and if I manually re-add a renamed music folder it duplicates the music in the library, but gives errors because it can't find the old one. There should at least be an easy graphical way to reload/update the library, or better yet, have it detect changes automatically. I have to do it manually by deleting ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml every time I tweak anything.

Thanks for your report, the first part of your report works fine here, if i rename a folder which contains some music and that folder is under my Music library which is watched by rhythmbox i get the update and the next start of rhythmbox. And the same issue happens if i update the tag of the songs lets say with easytag, which type of tags are they? ID3V2, ID3V1 ? would be nice to have also the output of "rhythmbox --debug" while you're performing that operations, thanks.

Pedro,

I was referring to the ID3 tags, but I was totally wrong about them not
getting automatically updated. When you change a tag (with Listen, for
example) it is updated immediately in Rhythmbox. You are correct, that
after renaming a folder containing music, that Rhythmbox has the correct
information after restarting the program - I don't know how I didn't notice
that that worked.

The songs are still duplicated in the library, if the folder is renamed
while Rhythmbox is open, and you try to view the songs, and half of them
don't work. I guess this is what I origionally noticed, although it isn't
nearly as large an annoyance as I originally thought. Sorry for the bad
info.

That works fine here also, If i rename a folder with the "Watch my library" activated it get duplicated if rhythmbox is open while doing the task, but if i restart rhythmbox the old folder (which was renamed) is listed on the missing files. does that works for you?.

Dear Pedro,

Yes, we are experiencing the same functionality.

Is this the way it is intended to work? I expected that since Rhythmbox
automatically updates the library with music *additions* as they are
made *without
restarting* the application, that it should also automatically update the
library when music is *removed* and handle *changes* made to the music
folders on disk as they are made, without requiring a restart. You are
correct, that closing and reopening Rhythmbox corrects any problems, but it
isn't obvious that you just need to close and reopen the program if it was
left open while you were making changes to your music files. All that is
clear is that there are errors, and a bunch of your albums won't play and
are showing duplicate songs. Unless you realize that restarting the program
refreshes the library, the problem won't go away until you get frustrated
and close the program after giving up on it, and then mysteriously works
when you try it again later.

Since you are experiencing the exact same functionality, but say that it
works fine, I suppose what I'm expecting is a feature, and not a bug, and
this should be moved from Bugs to Feature Requests. There is clearly a
built in notification process for detecting when files are added, but I
think there should be one for when files are removed, so that all changes
are handled transparently by the software. If this isn't possible, I'd like
to see a "Check for Changes" or a "Refresh Music Library" option on a little
button, or in a right click menu, which to me is more intuitive than closing
and restarting the application. I'd be perfectly happy to resubmit this as
a feature request, if that is what I should do.

*Pedro, I really appreciate the time you've taken in responding twice now,
to my bug report. Rhythmbox is my favorite music player - it's a wonderful
program.* *Rhythmbox does 95% of everything I need a music player to do,
while having a VERY simple interface, and is shockingly easy to use.

*Thanks again!

Sure not a problem, I'm closing this bug then, feel free to report a new one regarding the feature request if you don't find one in launchpad or in http://bugzilla.gnome.org, thanks!.
