Bug Description

I am using Gutsy Beta (everything up to date), upgraded from Feisty. I am running on a Dell Latitude D400 which uses an intel graphics chip.

I have 'Extra' selected for the compiz settings, and I am currently mirroring my laptop display onto an external LCD monitor, configured from the Screens and Graphics applet rather than the built in laptop functions. I have 4 virtual desktops configured.

When I change desktops by clicking on the the Workspace Switcher, no problem. If I use ctrl-alt-arrowkey to switch desktops, no problem. But when I use ctrl-alt-arrowkey to switch desktops, and THEN switch again by clicking the Workspace Switcher, the window manager and all my applications just vanish. I can continue to switch desktops using ctrl-alt-arrowkey (at least I think I do... the relevant compiz eyecandy appears on the screen.) but there is no actual window manager to speak of.

If I switch to a console and then try to switch back, I am left with a black screen and blinking cursor. The graphical mode is not restored. I have to restart gdm to get back in. I can't find anything of note in either dmesg or /var/log/messages.

I can confirm this issue. However, I didn't try and use the console. So I don't know about that part.

In my case the window manager and running programmes visually disappear when I click on the workspace switcher on the Gnome panel. Although all programmes keep running, they don't show, anymore. I also tried CTRL-1/CTRL-2/CTRL-3/etc. to try and switch to a particular desktop, but to no avail.

I can confirm with the released Gutsy. Clicking on the Workspace Switcher makes everything but the wallpaper disappear. No desktop icons, no panel, no right-click desktop menu.

Running 'killall -HUP gnome-panel' from an ssh session recovers display of the panel, and from there the original workspace and window set can be recovered. After that, switching by clicking on the applet generally works, but it's glitchy, and windows often move around or are hidden after a switch.

ctrl+alt+arrowkey doesn't work at all for me under gtk-window-decorator.

The Workspace Switcher applet also only shows windows for the current desktop.

This is x86_64 with the nvidia proprietary driver, displaying on two heads under TwinView. Also upgraded from Feisty.

You had a mixture of desktops and viewports, which is not supported. In hardy we've made it impossible to use desktops so you cannot run into this problem anymore.
