Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

pidgin-data 2.2.1-1ubuntu3 (gutsy) ships with pidgin-menu.xpm in /usr/share/pixmaps, which is quite ugly. The pidgin-source offers the nicer ./pidgin-2.2.1/pidgin/pixmaps/pidgin.ico or pixmaps/icons/48/pidgin.png.

Is this icon used anywhere in the interface, or is it just a leftover?

I've been told this icon is kept for legacy purposes. As far as I can see, the regular png icon gets used for the launcher. Can we close this?

Yes after reading it up on freedesktop.org, /usr/share/icons/hicolor is used in the automatically created menu entry. I stumpled across this ugly icon when I defined my own launcher. Still it would be nice to have a good icon since choosing an icon for a launcher under XFCE opens a file chooser with /usr/share/pixmaps. Don't know about the legacy purpose and XPM vs PNG.
