gnome-terminal won't launch

Bug Description

evanmarkert@evan-desktop:~$ gnome-terminal
The program 'gnome-terminal' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 1182 error_code 8 request_code 72 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Fresh Install of RC 7.10. Tried to launch gnome-terminal and wouldn't work. Flickered and never opened. Same with System -> Administration -> Software Sources. Other programs work, such as firefox and pidgin and xchat.

Thanks for your report, Do you have Visual Effects enabled? Does it happen without it? What's your video card? what if you run it with --sync ? Thanks.

It occurs at all levels of visual effects, both off and on high and my video card is an nvidia geforce 6800. I tried to install the nivida drivers, but to no avail. As far as --sync goes, I haven't been at my computer in a few days (out of town) and I haven't been able to try. If any light, as far as what to expect and what --sync will do, that would help me further this investigation.

The same on Ubuntu 7.10 with all updates as of this moment (15.10.2007 UTC 10:56) with Intel GMA 950 video card.
The gnome-terminal and some other applications wont start.Here is a list of some of the: update-manager, the add/remove programs thing, but Synaptic manger is working.

issue present in RC after upgrade from 7.04...

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV18GL [Quadro NVS 280 SD] (rev a2)

no visual effects.

workaround: use xterm :

alt-f2 : xterm

in xterm

XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 gnome-terminal

will start gnome-terminal
