Bug Description

All sounds are mute in Ubuntu - whether or not headphones are in, no matter what I try to do in alsamixer, and no matter which program is trying to output sound. This was not an issue in Edgy or Feisty. I don't know much about the sound subsystem, so if there is anything I can provide to help debug, please ask. Thanks!

I had this problem using a lenovo 3000 v200 laptop.

Everything seems to be ok (lsmod ok, xmms playing ok) but no sound. After severals configurations and google research I found this links

I just figured out a procedure to make the sound work again in my hp laptop. Usually, I use the laptop connected to the power source. If I shut down, disconnect the power and boot using the battery, Feisty comes up with sound again. I also verified that booting Vista (on my dual boot laptop) kills the sound after I reboot with Linux. Apparently, the bug does have something to do with ACPI.

So, I tried to boot my laptop on battery, and "oh miracle" the sound works fine. I put the AC current back and the sound was still there.

But another bug appears : putting headphones does not shut down speackers !!! a known bug

Hope this helps

Yann

Hi Ryan,

The https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems was updated recently, so you might want to check it out again. One this that you may want to try is running gnome-alsamixer to verify all your volume levels are up and nothing is muted. Also you might want to try installing linux-backports-modules which has an updated version of ALSA.

Another option is that the Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. You might want to try testing with this newer kernel and verify if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1 LiveCD was released with the older 2.6.22 kernel. You'll have to manually install the newer Hardy Heron kernel in order to test. This should not be the case for Alpha2 which is set to come out around Dec 20. However, here are the instructions to install if you choose to do so, otherwise just wait for Alpha2 to come out:

1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted

2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new kernel from the grub menu

After you've tested, please feel free to revert back - ie boot into the old kernel, sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic, and remove the line from /etc/apt/sources.list . Please update this report with your results. Thanks in advance!

The Gutsy kernel solves the problem. I'm upgrading to Gutsy as we speak to verify that it works with my hardware installation, but I tried an Alpha 3 LiveCD and it played sound just fine.
