FreeAgent external USB hard drive does not mount when connected

Bug Description

If I boot Gutsy and then plug in my NTFS-formatted Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive, it does not mount. It is displayed correctly by lsusb, and it registers and devices sdb and sdb1, but I cannot use ntfs-3g to mount them.

However, if I reboot, the drive is mounted automatically as read-write.

I have the same disk and the problem that it doesn't appears again after unmount. The easiest way to get the drive automount again is to remove power for some seconds of the hard disk and then plug it again.

That workaround did the trick, but the bug is still there. If the power to the drive is already on and then it is connected via USB, why does it not automount?

I am not sure if it is a Ubuntu bug since I had this issue with Feisty and Gutsy. Could you recheck it with Windows? Btw. it is not possible to shut down hard disk with eject since remounts it all the time and unmount doesn't eject it. OK, it seems to shut down after some time without interaction but then it needs a restart with usb cable unplug and replug.
I guess it is a Seagte Firmware issue, but I am not sure. I hadn't this problem with my other three hard disks but they have a power button.
