Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org2

Using OO 2.3 I cannot add an LDAP datasource for use as address book.
File->New->Database->Connect to New database

Does not list LDAP as a connection. I cannot find a way to enable this.
OTOH evolution does work with the LDAP setup.

Hi, thanks for your bug report. I changed the package to openoffice.org as openoffice.org2 is no longer used.

No, it is not. #93546 is mostly concerned with Thunderbird, even if the first mention of Ubuntu's OpenOffice (now LibreOffice) missing LDAP access capabilities in its Base is in that bug report (back in 2002 !!!).

I cannot fathom why Ubuntu insists on removing LDAP access capabilities from Base. And persists beyond the switch to LibreOffice. I suppose that after the years people who need this just install straight from OpenOffice.org, but I wouldn't say that it's a good thing.

Access to LDAP as a "database" format can be very handy for things like reporting or mailings. In enterprise settings, much Customer (and internal organization) information resides in LDAP databases.

If space is lacking on the distribution CD: (a) it probably would make more sense to omit "Unix ODBC" than omitting LDAP; and (b) it certainly would make sense to have a Ubuntu package providing that access rather than forcing to use the OOo package.

Note there already *is* some LDAP access in the Ubuntu/LibreOpenOffice, as apparently loading profiles through LDAP access is important enough to warrant a kind word in Synaptic (and a package); but that stops short of allowing LDAP databases as a Base format.

Puzzling. This is a GRREAT set of products and, on balance, a very minor subject.

Thanks!
