CheckGmail Slow During Video Playback in Gutsy

I should mention this may be an mplayer issue; although the problem seems to occur in VLC as well.

I have the slight feeling that it's none of these; that it may just be a restricted-modules/nvidia issue. Darn!

Have you tried disabling desktop effects/compiz?
What graphic card driver are you using?
Does it happen, if you use the free one (e.g. "nv" instead of "nvidia", if you have a nvidia card)?

When I disabled compiz the problem went away.
You were right; I still think it's related to an nvidia driver update though.

Also, the issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. No, the problem went away, although I am convinced now it is/was related to
the nvidia driver I was using, I mean, there were an assortment of other
issues; for example, pink lines across mplayer windows, see
http://www.harshj.com/2007/12/14/fixing-the-garbled-video-issue-in-ubuntu-for-nvidia-cards/.
I've tried rolling back my driver but I had a lot of other xorg
problems
after so I gave up.

Short answer: the problem is gone now, probably because I upgraded my nvidia
driver (geforce 6600).
