Bug Description

Binary package hint: checkgmail

After upgrading to Gutsy Beta, during video playback---if I receive an e-mail notification, popup window is incredibly slow and hard to read; video playback grinds to a skipping slow-motion. Audio is fine; everything is slows down. Did NOT have this problem in Feisty.

I should mention this may be an mplayer issue; although the problem seems to occur in VLC as well.

I have the slight feeling that it's none of these; that it may just be a restricted-modules/nvidia issue. Darn!

Have you tried disabling desktop effects/compiz?
What graphic card driver are you using?
Does it happen, if you use the free one (e.g. "nv" instead of "nvidia", if you have a nvidia card)?

When I disabled compiz the problem went away.
You were right; I still think it's related to an nvidia driver update though.

thanks!

I'm assigning the bug to compiz then.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Also, the issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/

Thanks for asking.
No, the problem went away, although I am convinced now it is/was related to
the nvidia driver I was using, I mean, there were an assortment of other
issues; for example, pink lines across mplayer windows, see
http://www.harshj.com/2007/12/14/fixing-the-garbled-video-issue-in-ubuntu-for-nvidia-cards/.
I've tried rolling back my driver but I had a lot of other xorg
problems
after so I gave up.

Short answer: the problem is gone now, probably because I upgraded my nvidia
driver (geforce 6600).

thanks! this is why linux is the future.....

PS I will test this an a heron release as soon as I can. you'll be sure to
know.
