Does this happen if you update again? This looks like something has corrupted somewhere, but should not be repeated.

I tried several times to run the 'apt-get install ubuntu-desktop'
without success, interspersed with the 'apt-get -f install', all to no
avail.

It is definitely some sort of file corruption. I have now managed to
copy the two files from another source, and completed the install of the
desktop.

The system was a fresh install of the 7.10 server edition, followed by
the install of the desktop which failed. The Server CD was set up as a
resource and requested during the desktop install, but I amnot sure
whether the files were copied from the CD or the internet. I had
performed the check of the CD after burning it.

What would have been nice is if there was some way of forcing the files
to be removed or refreshed. Anyway, I copied replacements of the files
from another machine and was able to complete successfully the install.

thanks
